Inside the engine room of the cross-channel paddle ferry Calais (1896). The chief engineer, W. Blackford, is in the centre of the picture, looking at the camera. A note on the negative says the photographer is using Camera B with a full aperture and a time of 5 minutes exposure, which seems to be excessive.
