Box base

Base for the circular wooden box made of the wood of the hip of the line 'Royal George', which sank at Spithead in 1782. The box and lid with the history pasted inside each half. Bottom of the box: 'First circle, a piece of oak brought up from the wreck of the Royal George, sunk at Spithead in Aug 1782. Second circle from a piece of oak taken from the late Royal William built in 1719 & broken up at Portsmouth in Aug 1823. Third circle from a piece of one of the original oak rafters of the Savoy prison, lately pulled down in the Strand, London. This box was given to me by J. Richards RN. Aug. 1833.’
