Fighting Ships and Uniforms of the Royal Navy

Printed poster, entitled 'Fighting Ships and Uniforms of the Royal Navy', 1948
W.F.P. 696 Issued by the National Savings Committee, London. Crown Copyright Reserve
During and after the Second World War, National Savings were a safe and popular way of making modest investments. The scheme was heavily promoted through posters, which frequently appealed to the patriotic duty of national saving, which helped fund the war effort and the subsequent recovery drive. This post-war example draws on the long history of the Royal Navy, highlighting key periods and individuals. Its emphasis on great men, famous ships and an unbroken line of naval tradition reflects the popular historical culture of the period and, by extension, the approach of the then recently reopened National Maritime Museum.
