Looking forward from the gantry of the fishing stern trawler Salvia (1972) berthed in Cape Town, South Africa. The photographer is standing on a working companionway under the gantry (or gallows) looking forward, aft and slightly to starboard. The port and starboard side black and red funnels are in the middle ground. Two ladders either side of the vessel leading to the superstructure are just in front of the funnels. Two large trawl winches are situated just aft of the superstructure in the middle ground. A set of tyres, five trawl otter boards and a pile of wooden pallets are on the weather deck in front of the trawl winches in the middle ground. There is a crowd of people gather on the quayside off the starboard side in front of the Salvia's funnel. Three dockyard workers are walking towards the group on the quayside aft of the starboard side funnel. The forward gallows is just aft of the bridge. This is Slide 11 of a series of slides detailing Captain H. Bird's service as Chief Officer on board the fishing stern motor trawler Salvia (1972) owned by Irving & Johnstone of Cape Town from 11 December 1972 to 8 January 1973. The series consists of 21 slides.
