The photographer is standing on the quayside of the former Royal Naval dockyard looking towards the port bow of Mercury. The cable ship John W. Mackay is berthed on the quayside forward of Mercury's bow. Circular storage tanks are in the foreground on the quayside. Part of the stone jetty of the harbour is in the middle ground off the starboard side of Mercury. coastlines and small craft are in the distant background. This is Slide 55 of a series of slides detailing Captain H. Bird's service as Watchkeeping Officer on board the cable ship John W. Mackay (1922) owned by the Commercial Cable Company of London from 22 January 1973 to 26 April 1973. The series consists of 62 slides.
