Romola Urquhart Anderson (née Mackenzie) and Roger Charles Anderson

A small hardbound sketchbook containing drawings in pencil, ink and watercolour, mainly coastal and landscape views. The inside cover is inscribed ‘Romola U. Anderson / April 1917’. Romola Urquhart Anderson (née Mackenzie) was a member of the Society for Nautical Research. Her husband, Roger Charles Anderson, was one of the Society’s founders.

Both Andersons contributed sketches in this book. Many of the drawings are initialled (‘RUA’ [Romola Urquhart Anderson] or ‘RCA’ [Roger Charles Anderson]). The bulk sketches are dated in 1917 and depict views around Gibraltar, where Roger Charles Anderson was stationed during World War I, serving in motor launches as an officer in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. His contributions to the sketchbook include annotated diagrams of historic cannons, demonstrating his interest in nautical research. The latest drawings in the sketchbook are dated in the 1960s.
