The photographer is tanding on a raised port side searchlight platform looking down and slightly to starboard. 3 crewmen are standing on the port side of the sheave whilst 4 people are standing on the starboard side of the sheave. Numerous cable floats are in the water aft of the vessel leading back to the Cretan shoreline in the background. A small motor boat is underway in the middle ground.This is Slide 5 of a series of slides detailing Captain H. Bird's service as Watchkeeping Officer for the cable ship John W. Mackay (1922) owned by Commercial Cable Company of London from 1 June 1975 to 6 July 1975. This series consists of 25 slides. The area the photograph was taken is called Amnisos by the photographer.
