Dockyard Creek and Fort St Angelo, Vittoriosa, Malta

Looking north-west-by-west down Dockyard Creek, Malta, to Fort St Angelo from the roof of the police house on the Vittoriosa shore. The Admiral Superintendent's (Rear-Admiral Sackville H Carden) residence is on the right with his steam barge moored alongside the jetty, partially hidden by the south portico. The figurehead on the north portico is thought to be that of the screw sloop Lark (1852), which was formerly named Cruizer (1852). The figurehead on the south portico is probably that of the training ship Cruiser (1879), formerly Lark (1879), formerly Kingfisher (1879). A seaman is up a ladder painting the verandah. Alongside Fort St Angelo is the accommodation hulk Cruiser (1879) and ahead of her is the destroyer Garry (1905). Moored in the creek are the submarines B9 (1906) with the pendant 29 and B11 (1906) with the pendant 00. Valletta is in the background with the Barracca on the left. A paddle tug is in Grand Harbour. Berry's notebook says the photograph was taken at 09.30.
