The damaged United States Navy destroyer Nelson (1942) on North Corner Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire
A port quarter view of the United States destroyer Nelson (1942) on North Corner Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard. Her No. 3 gun mount has been removed and her crew, assisted by dockyard workmen are cutting away the mangled remains of her stern. Her twin 40 mm Bofors are covered. A pontoon with pieces of wreckage on it is alongside her port quarter. Everything forward of the bridge is out of the picture. Her stern was blown off by a torpedo from the German motor torpedo boat S.138 off Omaha Beach, Normandy, and temporary repairs were undertaken in Portsmouth Dockyard to enable her to get to Londonderry.
