A close-up of the starboard side of the tank landing ship LST 404 (1942), looking aft from very close alongside amidships, showing severe damage to the hull and upper deck. She is beached on Ryde Sands, Isle of Wight, having been towed there by the U.S. rescue tug ATR 4 (1943) after being torpedoed by the German submarine U.741 (1943) on 15 Aug. 1944 35 miles south-east of St Catherine's Point while in convoy FTM.69. The U.741 was counter-attacked and sunk by the British corvette Orchis with just one survivor.
