Battleships at sea
Signed by the artist in the lower margin. This print is a technically fair depiction of 'Iron Duke'-class battleships in 1917, after the fore control top was enlarged but before a flying-off platform was added to 'B' turret. A 'Lightfoot'-class flotilla leader destroyer is on the right and a spotter aircraft above amid flying seabirds. This is the type of commercially popular small print of which Wyllie produced a large number, of many subjects. The tonal mastery and sweeping composition, with the guns trained to starboard, the streaming flag signals, the aircraft and wheeling birds, pack a great deal of visual excitement into its limited dimensions.
