Rua do Ouvidor, a street in Rio de Janeiro

A black and white portrait photograph of shopfronts and balconies on Rua do Ouvidor, a street in Rio de Janeiro. Three poles, presumably for flags or banners, protrude from buildings on both sides. Metal arches hang between the row of buildings; a mixture of two and three-stoies, some with balconies and window shutters. Awnings are pictured in the background. Shop signs in Portuguese are visible in the foreground of the image, including ‘PIANOS E MUSICAS’ (PIANOS AND MUSIC) and ‘LOJA DE PEKIN’ (BEIJING SHOP). Two shop signs to the left-hand side of the image are shaped like wine bottles. Various pedestrians, mostly men, can be seen walking up and down or stood still on the street. Several men are wearing dark frock coats, waistcoats, trousers, and top hats. Two men walking at the bottom of the image are carrying canes. A girl in a white skirt is walking into a shop, while a nearby dog looks on. Two men standing in the bottom right are pictured without frock coats. Original captions: (within the photograph) ‘Rua do Ouvidor, Marc Ferrez’ and (beneath, in ink) ‘Rio de Janeiro Brazil; Sept 1888’.
