Chinese people riding in a single-wheeled wheelbarrow
ALB0825.9 A black and white oval photograph showing Chinese people pushing and riding on a single-wheeled wheelbarrow. The right side of the wheelbarrow is facing the camera, with a Chinese man holding its shafts, his right side facing the camera. He is wearing a hat, padded jacket, trousers and cloth shoes. Another Chinese man, also wearing a hat, padded clothing is seated on the lefthand side of the wheelbarrow, holding a baby. He has a typical Qing hairstyle, the front part of his head shaved with a queue ('pigtail') hanging down his back. The baby’s head is blurred although a hat is visible on its head. Opposite the man, on the other side of the wheel, sits a Chinese woman with her face to the camera. She dressed in dark-coloured clothing with skirts covering her legs. Both adult passengers have their feel off the ground. The wheelbarrow is traveling along a paved bath bordered by grass or some other ground-cover plants. In the background, a light-coloured wooden picket fence is visible running across the central line of the image, with a palm tree and various other plants behind it. To the right of the image, a traditional Chinese-style roof can be seen further back. Original caption (handwritten beneath): ‘Native Wheelbarrow’.
