She wears a sari (including an ankle-length skirt, blouse with sleaves covering her upper arms and headscarf) and is barefoot. She also has bangles on both her writs. The boy stands slightly behind her, to the right of the image. He wears a shirt with a slit down the front. He also has bangles on both wrists and is barefoot. Both are standing on bare, dry earth, possibly a street or road. Two other children can also be seen further behind the woman, on the left side of the image. Other, smaller figures, are also visible on the right of the image. Two one-storey buildings with roofs made of sheets of metal can be seen behidn these figures, with palm trees and other vegetation in the background.

The people shown in this photograph may be indentured labourers in the Caribbean.
