Fish of the Cape name unknown / Capt. Kendal
One side of this sheet features a watercolour of a brown striped fish, inscribed ‘Fish of the Cape name unknown’. The fish may be a redfingers (Cheilodactylus fasciatus). The drawing is the work of naval officer Aiskew Paffard Hollis (1764–1844). It was probably produced between 1796 and 1798, when Hollis was serving at the Cape of Good Hope, initially in the ‘Chichester’ and later in the ‘Tremendous’. The other side of the sheet features a portrait of a man in profile, his head tilted downwards. The portrait is rendered in pen and ink, shaded with wash, and is inscribed ‘Capt. Kendal’. For other examples of Hollis’s work, see PAH4885 and ZBB0352–84.
