Furness Fell – Langdale Pikes – Lake of Windermere looking to the Northward from Bowness / Furness Fell – Langdale Pikes
One side of this sheet features a detailed pen-and-ink view of Lake Windermere with trees in the foreground. It is inscribed ‘Lake of Windermere, looking to the Northward from Bowness’. The other side of the sheet another pen-and-ink view of Lake Windermere with the Furness Fells and Great Langdale in the distance. There is a garden with benches in the foreground, in which several figures sit reading and admire the view through telescope. The church beyond may be St Martin’s Church at Bowness-on-Windermere. These drawings are the work of naval officer Aiskew Paffard Hollis (1764–1844). After his retirement of active service in 1821, Hollis lived at his estate at Highfield, near Southampton, and toured around various parts of England. He visited Lake Windermere at least once, in autumn 1840. For other examples of Hollis’s work, see PAH4885 and ZBB0352–84.
