John Grieve sketches including Dover ca.1836

Unbound, soft-backed volume containing 13 sketches (PAG3794-PAG3806) of mainly coastal subjects in graphite, pen and ink or pen and wash, some unfinished or faint. Some pages torn or partially removed. Inscribed ‘Dover/Augst 1836’ in brown ink on outside of front sheet. Inscribed ‘12345 JG’ on front cover, and each page verso in brown ink. John Henderson Grieve (1770–1845) was a Scottish scenery painter in London theatres, including at Drury Lane and in Covent Garden. His sons and grandson continued the family business throughout the nineteenth century, supplying scenery for some of the most important productions of the period. Stored in archival folder with PAG3780.
