The Essex East Indiaman in the Afternoon of the same Day, taken in Tow by the Byrangore Frigate and carried into Bombay
Plate 3. The 'Essex', 799 tons, was the fourth Indiaman of the name, built by John Perry at Blackwall and launched in 1780. This print is one of a series of four (PAH0509-0512) recounting her dismasting in a violent storm between Tellicherry and Bombay, and her subsequent rescue and towing to Bombay. It occurred on her exceptionally long maiden voyage under Captain Arthur Morris to India and China. She had left the Thames in December 1780 and returned in 1783.
