Paddy Park, 'Queen'

Watercolour portrait of an officer of the Royal Marines in profile to viewer’s left. He wears Marine uniform, consisting of a red coat with white facings. His blonde hair is ‘clubbed’ (folded and tied with a ribbon at the nape of his neck), a popular hairstyle among military men of the time. Inscribed beneath the image is his nickname and his ship: ‘Paddy Park, Queen’. A speech bubble from his mouth is inscribed: ‘Bethershin Daddy’. This refers to another portrait mounted on the same page (PAH4929), which depicts John ‘Daddy’ Urquhart, the Master of the ‘Queen’. ‘Bethershin’ is a traditional Irish exclamation. ‘Paddy Park’ was probably Second Lieutenant (later Captain) Edward Parke (1764–1835), who served in the ‘Queen’ at the same time as Urquhart.

The sketch was made by Aiskew Paffard Hollis (1764–1844), who served alongside Park and Urquhart as a lieutenant in the ‘Queen’. It is part of an album containing fifty-seven drawings (PAH4886–PAH4943) created by Hollis while serving in ‘Queen’ and in other ships, including ‘Pegase’ in 1785–90 and ‘Andromeda’ in 1790–93. The album includes portraits of Hollis’s shipmates, often with humorous captions, as well as scenes of everyday life ashore and afloat.
