Revd Samuel Rolles Driver (1846-1914)
Print. The small photograph pasted on to the same sheet as this portrait is an earlier image of the sitter in it, but with his initials accidentally reversed in its caption as 'Rev. R. S. Driver, D.D.' Samuel Rolles Driver (1846-1914) was a biblical scholar, Church of England clergyman and Professor of Hebrew at Christ Church College, Oxford, from 1881 until his death in 1914. William James Herschel became an unattached member of the theological department at Oxford in 1881 when he returned to England after retirement from the Indian Civil Service, so must have known Driver: this print, from his collection, is identified by the pencil inscription on it as after an oil portrait by Briton Riviere that was painted for the College in 1909 and exhibited the following year.
