Portrait of a captain, ca.1740
A three-quarter-length portrait to the left showing the unidentified sitter in a brown coat and a white, gold-frogged waistcoat, wearing a grey wig. His right hand is on his hip; his left elbow rests on a cannon and he carries a telescope in his left hand. He stands on a shore with a rocky cliff to the right; a two-decker ship firing a salute (?) is on the left.
