Clipper Ship 'South Australian'

This lithograph depicts a port broadside view of the clipper ship ‘South Australian’, flying the ‘Devitt & Moore’ house flag. A boat is coming alongside the ship. To the left is a smaller sailing vessel. Further vessels and a hilly coastline are visible in the distance.

The ‘South Australian’ was built by William Pile at North Sands and launched on 24 February 1868. The original owner was Joseph Moor of Devitt and Moore.

The lithograph is an impression before letters. The finished lithograph was published by William Foster on 17 June 1868 with the title and dedication ‘Clipper Ship “South Australian”, 1040 tons register. / David Bruce, Commander. / To Messrs. Devitt and Moore, Owners, Mr. W. Pile, Builder, and the Officers of the Ship.’
