A Kenyan woman operating a well

A black and white portrait photograph of a Kenyan woman operating a well. The woman is in the centre of the image. She is facing the camera but her body is half-turned to the right of the image as she hangs off the wooden handle of the well mechanism above her, gripping it with both hands. Her left leg is visible, bent and resting of what may be the concrete lip of the well. She is wearing a dress that covers her torso and most of her legs. The winch mechanism is spool-shaped, with the rope wound about its central shafts. Each end has four handles protruding. A bucket on a rope hangs down behind the woman. The spool is atached to an L-shaped concrete/stone structure that frames the woman. Behind this, in the backgrond, can be seen tropical foliage, including palm trees. Another structure is just visible in the background to the right of the image. Original caption (jointly with ALB0756.69-71): ' MOMBASSA / JUNGLE LIFE'.
