Seven of them are wearing dresses and two are wearing cropped shirts and shorts. The man standing in the middle of the upper row has a mortarboard on his head. The two on the end of either side on the bottom row are squatting, each with one leg outstretched toward the middle, wearing boots; these men are also wearing small hats. The sailors are probably in the compartment of a ship, as a companion ladder, bulkheads with rivets and pipework can be seen behind or around them.
