Walking stick

A whalebone walking stick with a brass ferule. The stick is square in section where it joins the handle which is attached with a whalebone dowel. The whale tooth handle is octagonal with vertical grooves and terminates in a knob carved in the shape of a ropework Turk's head. The point where the handle joins the stick is carved in imitation of plaited rope. Made by Captain William Tolley Brookes (1791-1874), commander of the whaler 'Active' in the late 1830s. This type of craftwork made by the crew of whaling ships is known as scrimshaw.
