Ship's badge of HMS 'Marlborough' 1912. It is an official design, a circular shape with a gold rope twist border, a naval crown above. 'MARLBOROUGH' is inscribed on the name tablet. It depicts red wyvern with a gold collar on a black background. The pattern was submitted in January 1920. The badge is made of cast iron and is painted. The badge is derived from the supporters of the arms of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722). The collar and locket worn by the animal, with St Andrew's saltire, was added after he received a Scottish peerage in 1683. The painting of the locket and the wyvern's claws and tongue, should be blue, and is therefore not quite correct. The badge belonged to the Iron Duke-Class battleship HMS 'Marlborough', launched in 1912 at Devonport Dockyard. She joined the 1st Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet and saw action at Jutland. In 1919 she evacuated members of the Russian Royal Family from the Black Sea. She was scrapped in 1932.
