Anchor; Roman

Roman merchant vessels often used anchors made from stone. Anchors like the one shown here have been recovered from Roman-era shipwrecks. The Romans also used iron anchor bases that resembled large pickaxe blades. The latter had long wooden shafts where ropes to the ship were attached, resembling some types of present-day sea anchors.
