'Chieftain'
A bearded polychrome half-length male figure of a highlander in military uniform, with blue plaid over the left shoulder and a bonnet with a chequered band. Before NMM acquired the 'Valhalla' collection this rather fine item was thought to have come from a vessel named ‘Chieftain’, wrecked on Hard Lewis in 1856. No records exist of such a wreck and at present, it is impossible to provide a firm identification.
