Panel
A whalebone panel engraved with a scene showing a whaling vessel in full sail on the horizon. A boat in the foreground is in the process of harpooning a sounding whale. A second boat has its harpoons attached to the animal and its oars out of the water, ready to be towed along by the whale until it tires and can be killed. Two more boats are shown in the distance. A coast is seen in the background. The panel is made from part of the lower jawbone of a sperm whale. A hand written label on the reverse gives the name of the collector 'R Lionel Foster June 14 1928'. This type of sailor's craftwork is known as scrimshaw.
