Victory Medal 1914-18
Awarded to Ernest Benjamin Ellis, Stoker I. Obverse: Winged Victory standing (front), a palm branch in her right hand, her left arm outstretched. Reverse: Within a laurel garland, Inscription: 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1919'. Inscribed on edge: 'K28237. E.B. ELLIS. STO.1. R.N.' Fitted with a watered silk ribbon of rainbow hues. Mounted on a bar with two others.
Ernest Benjamin Ellis (1897-1918) was the son of a railway worker. He entered the Royal Navy on 27 April 1915 and died in the loss of destroyer HMS 'Racoon', wrecked in a snowstorm on the North coast of Ireland, 9 January 1918. All hands were lost.
