Snuff box

Silver box presented to Captain Moore of the 'Princess Maude'.

Shaped rectangular snuff box with scroll decoration on the edges and engraved wavy decoration on the sides and lid. It is hinged at the back, with a scrolled thumb piece in front. The lid is inscribed: 'Presented to CAPTAIN MOORE by some of the visitors on board the "PRINCESS MAUDE" AS A MEMENTO OF THEIR APPRECIATION OF his skilled and excellent management of that Vessel on the occasion of Her Majesty's REVIEWING THE FLEET AT SPITHEAD, on the 11th August 1853'.

'Princess Maude', a paddle steamer, was built in 1844 as a cross-Channel passenger vessel belonging to the London, Brighton and S. W. Railway Company. The box was presented by the Board of Directors of the Railway, ten of whom were on board during the Review.
