Awarded to George Biddell Airy for optical researches- chiefly contained in papers laid before the Cambridge Philosophical Society. ("For his Papers, On the principle of the construction of the Achromatic Eye-pieces of Telescopes, – On the Spherical Aberration of the Eye-pieces of Telescopes, and for other Papers on Optical Subjects in the Transactions of the Cambridge Philosophical Society").
