Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Marine Medal 1874

Awarded to Frank Roberts, fireman, US ship SS 'Roosevelt'. Obverse: A man kneeling on a piece of wreckage saving a woman and child from the water; in the distance a boat picking up a person from the water, a ship under sail on the horizon. Legend: 'LORD SAVE US WE PERISH'. Reverse: Within an oak wreath a 'Liver' Bird with an olive branch in its beak. (The crest of Liverpool). Legend: 'LIVERPOOL SHIPWRECK AND HUMANE SOCIETY 1839'. Inscription on edge: 'TO FRANK ROBERTS FOR GALLANT SERVICE 24/28 JANY 1926'. Suspended by a cusped clasp from a blue ribbon fitted with an engraved bar and a pin buckle.

'Antinoe', Egypt & Levant steamship Co., left New York bound for Queenstown laden with grain.,She encountered heavy seas in the Atlantic, sustained damage and took on water. an S.O.S. wireless signal was picked up by 'Aquitainia' and 'President Roosevelt'. The latter ship was nearer and went to her aid, arriving on the 25th January 1926. She launched a boat with a crew of eight which capsized with a loss of two men. On the evening of the following day, having failed to get a line to 'Antinoe', a second boat was launched and took off the 23 hands and the master in three journeys.
