1914-15 Star

Awarded to Able Seaman Robert John Squires DSM (1883-1959). A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.'. An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G'. with a 'V' within it. Inscription Reverse: '215816, R.J.SQUIRES, A.B., R.N.'. Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon. Mounted on a bar with four other.

Robert John Squires was born in Swanage, Dorset and joined the Royal Navy, signing up for twelve years’ service in 1901. He was an Able Seaman during the First World War in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, notably in minelayer R.F.A. 'Princess Margaret', and was awarded the Distinguished Service medal for his service on this ship. He ended his naval service on HMS 'Malaya' from 1921 until 1924 and was pensioned from 1926. He returned to Swanage and in 1939 was working as a chauffeur and gardener (his father had been a gardener and seedsman). He died in Poole.
