An image showing 'G3377;Following King George III’s visit to Sidmouth in 1781, it grew from a small village into a stylish resort. It was popular with affluent visitors including Queen Victoria’s parents. Bypassed by the railway in the mid-19th century, Sidmouth declined in popularity; tourists were deterred by the long coach journey from Exeter. The railway finally here arrived in the late 19th century.'

Looking east-by-north from Chit Rocks along the seafront at Sidmouth to Salcombe Hill and Cliff. A Cosens paddle steamer is preparing to beach. A large number of holidaymakers are on the promenade and beach, with many beach tents in use. A few people are swimming. Francis Frith & Co negative no. 76355.
