The artist, William Henry Barribal (1873–1956), trained in lithography in London and furthered his artistic studies in Paris. He produced a series of recruitment posters during the First World War. In the 1920s and 1930s, Barribal worked for a number of commercial clients, including Schweppes, Waddington’s, Vogue magazine and LNER. His wife, Gertrude Louisa Fannie Pitt, became the artist’s principal female model.
