Serial number: 076/80M

Battery-powered quartz-controlled marine chronometer by an unknown maker. By the 1980s marine navigation was increasingly using radio direction-finding but inexpensive quartz chronometers like this one, seen as the successor to the mechanical chronometer, were still in use, especially in smaller craft. This machine was used on British Royal Navy ships during the 1980s. By the late 1980s, the use of chronometers had been fully superseded by GPS navigation.

The quartz movement and battery are contained in a glazed mahogany case with a ribbed rubber base.

Access to the battery compartment and hand-set controls is by unscrewing the base. Basic operating instructions are contained in a label applied to the outer side of the case.

The dial has a black ground with white Arabic numerals. The main chapter ring is numbered one to 12 with a smaller subsidiary ring of numerals inside numbered 13 to 00. The bottom of the dial is marked 'QUARTZ CHRONOMETER'. The display incorporates a centre-seconds hand.

A second applied label shows that the chronometer was the property of the Ministry of Defence, Hydrographic Department. The serial number is 076/80M.
