Journal of James Furnell, covering a voyage on the East Indiaman WINDSOR, 1842-1843.
Journal kept by James Furnell as chief officer on the WINDSOR (1835), 25 September 1842 to Thursday 20 July 1843. The pages for May 1843 describe a hurricane off the Cape of Good Hope, during which the sea broke over the poop and washed him overboard. He suffered from a broken kneecap for the remainder of the voyage. Furnell dedicated the journal to his wife Anne and interspersed the entries with prayers, religious homilies, and a few pen drawings, including an illustration entitled 'ghosts'. Some printed engravings also appear in the volume.
