Stand

Small tureen, cover and stand made for Sir George Nares' Arctic Expedition of 1875. It is white glazed and transfer-printed in black with elaborate rope borders, simple rope rims and the badge of the expedition - a polar bear within a garter. The handles are picked out in a leaf design. The garter is inscribed 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875'. 'DISCOVERY' is printed on the base of all three pieces ('HMS Discovery' 1874 was one of the expedition's two vessels). An anchor is printed on the base of each piece inscribed 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875', 'W.T.COPELAND AND SONS'. The manufacturer's date mark is also impressed on the base of the stand.
