War service plaque

Bronze war service plaque for 'Pretoria Castle' 1938 later 'Warwick Castle'. The central panel has a border cast in relief with sea birds, a trident and at the base breaking waves and two dolphins supporting a compass rose. There are two roundels at the top, one containing an enamelled Union Castle house flag, inscribed: 'UNION CASTLE'; the other, an anchor on a red background, within a wreath surmounted by a naval crown. The plaque has bolts and screws for attachment. Engraved inscription: '1939-1945' ' M.V. WARWICK CASTLE 17, 383 GROSS TONS. IN COMMEMORATION OF THE WAR SERVICES OF THIS GOOD SHIP AND THE DEVOTION TO DUTY OF THOSE WHO SERVED IN HER. 1939 2ND OCTOBER AS 'PRETORIA CASTLE', REQUISITIONED BY H.M. GOVERNMENT, FOR USE AS AN ARMED MERCHANT CRUISER. 1941 MAY-JUNE. INSTRUMENTAL IN INTERCEPTING TWO VICHY FRENCH SHIPS. AUGUST. INTERCEPTED GERMAN S.S. "NORDERNEY" A BLOCKADE RUNNER WITH A CARGO OF RUBBER. 1942 JANUARY. ATTACKED AN ENEMY SUBMARINE WITH GUNFIRE AND DEPTH CHARGES IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC. MARCH. INTERCEPTED AND ESCORTED TO BATHURST SPANISH SHIP THE "MONTE GARBEA". JULY. ACQUIRED BY H.M. GOVERNMENT AND CONVERTED TO A TRIALS AIRCRAFT CARRIER FOR TESTING THE LANDING AND TAKE OFF OF VARIOUS TYPES OF AIRCRAFT. 1946. MARCH THE "PRETORIA CASTLE" WAS RE-ACQUIRED FROM H.M. GOVERNEMENT AND RENAMED "WARWICK CASTLE". 1947 13TH MARCH. AFTER RECONVERSION THE "WARWICK CASTLE" WAS RETURNED TO NORMAL DUTY.'
