Pocket watch in gold case. Thirty hour duration, single train, ¾ plate, gilt brass keyless movement with duplex escapement. Uncut bimetallic screwed balance with blued-steel flat spiral balance spring. Jewelled balance and escape wheel pivot holes. Engraved balance cock with polished steel index. Upper plate stamped with the words 'Tuxedo', 'TRADE MARK', 'U.S.A', '813891', 'PATENTED' and 'R'. Index scale stamped 'S F'. Flat white enamel dial with black Arabic hour numerals 1-11 with a red 12. Minute circle and Arabic five-minute numerals. Slightly sunk subsidiary seconds dial with Arabic ten-second numerals and seconds circle. Signed below 12 with 'Tuxedo'. Pierced decorative gold hands. Gold, plain open face case. Stamped inside rear cover with '14K'. Scratched with '207328', '1229', 'CN861', '1/841', '1/71' and 'CL (altered from a V)VII'. Straight pendant, plain bow and gold covered crown. Convex glass over dial. The watch comes complete with a watchstand the shape of a chair without legs, with a cushion in navy blue plush (pin cushion) and circular back rest for the watch. Inscribed on a label are the words 'American rolled gold watch given to DHB by T.H. Ismay when on a visit to Gyrn 1896'. The watch was presented to Denis Haughton Bates, who was the son of Sir Edward Bates by Thomas Henry Ismay of the White Star Line on the occasion of his visit to Gyrn Castle, North Wales.
