French soldier on a quay with an anchor, from 'Poor Jack' (1840) p.256
ZBA4152–56 form a group of sample proofs for the wood-engraved illustrations to Captain Marryat’s ‘Poor Jack’ (1840) from the studio collection of Clarkson Stanfield RA, acquired 9.04 (Bagshawe Collection). This one is inscribed in pencil by Stanfield 'The Vignette, no title to it'. 'Poor Jack' was originally published in parts with a total of seven such chapter 'tailpieces' through the completed volume. [PvdM 5.06]
