Howitzer, 24pdr
Two brass muzzleloading smoothbore howitzers mounted on wooden rear-chock carriages. Calibre: 5.75in. Ships of the First, Second and Third Rates carried howitzers for use in their boats, firing explosive shells at a high angle. They were also among the armament of gunboats in the Crimean War, 1854–6.
