Record tin with lid

A cylindrical record tin with a cap. It is made of sheet brass which has been soldered. Inscribed on the side is: 'His Britannic Majesty's Ships Hecla and Fury. Port Bowen June 1825.' It appears to have been deposited by William Edward Parry during his third voyage in search of a North West Passage. The Journal of the Royal United Service Institution for 1877 lists recent donations to the RUSI museum. One of the donations received from the Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty is described as "A Cylinder marked for His Brittanic Majesty's Ships Hecla and Fury, Port Bowen, June 1825. Containing papers left by Captain Kennedy R.N. Commanding H.M. Ship Prince Albert in 1851, at Port Bowen, Prince Regent Isle. This item was brought home by Captain Suter of the Tay Whale Fishing Company's ship 'Intrepid'. This refers to Captain William Kennedy (1814–1890) who was not actually an officer in the Royal Navy. The whaling captain was William Soutar of the Tay Seal and Whale Fishing Company, active in the early 1870s.
