Medal commemorating the capture of Tournai, 1709
Medal commemorating the capture of Tournai, 1709. Obverse: A Spanish vessel labouring in a heavy sea, her mainmast with the French flag on it afloat astern, cargo being thrown overboard. Legend: 'NE PEREAT PERDIT.' (She loses that she may not be lost.) Reverse: Tournai bombarded. Legend: 'SOLVTA CATENIS INSVRGIT' Exergue: 'TORNACVM CAPTVM MDCCIX'. Inscription (on edge): 'REGNI COLLAPSA RVVNT IMMANIA MEMBRA. VIRGIL' (The huge members of the kingdom fall in ruin.) This emblematic medal illustrates that France was unable to hold all her fortunes in the Spanish Netherlands but was willing to sacrifice some places to keep the remainder. (School of Nuremberg)
