Commemorative medal depicting Vernon's attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Full-length figure of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), wearing hat (left), facing to the right; left hand extended, right receiving the sword which 'DON BLASS', on left knee before Vernon, offers with his right hand, hat in extended left. Small ship (right), sailing to the right. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'THE . PRIDE . OF . SPAIN . HUMBLED . BY . AD : VERNON'. Exergue: Ornament of lion's head between branches with leaves. N in 'DON' reversed. Reverse: Four ships sailing right towards barred entrance of port between two forts, (right). City and church with steeple on hill, (left). Leaf ornament below water. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'VERNON : CONQUERD : CARTAGENA' Exergue: 'APRIL I : 1741'. A disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. On this occasion the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
