Davies Gilbert
Engraving of portrait of Davies Gilbert (1767-1839) by Henry Howard. Gilbert (formerly Giddy) was an applied mathematician, administrator, MP and President of the Royal Society (1827-30). As an MP he dealt with legislation concerning many issues including the Nautical Almanac, the Board of Longitude, and the establishment of an astronomical observatory at the Cape of Good Hope.
