Medal commemorating Captain James Cook (1728-1779). Medal struck by the Royal Society in memory of Cook. Obverse: Bust of Captain Cook in tie-wig and uniform (left). Legend: 'IAC . COOK OCEANI INVESTIGATOR ACERRIMVS'. (The most intrepid investigator of the seas). Exergue: 'REG . SOC . LOND . SOCIO . SVO.' Reverse: A draped female figure (Fortune) stands leaning against a rostral column, a spear in her left hand and a rudder in her right hand resting on a globe. The British shield leans against the column (right). Legend: 'NIL INTENTATVM NOSTRI LIQVERE' (Our men have left nothing unattempted). Exergue: 'AVSPICIIS GEORGII III'.
