HMS Alert (1856), surveying cruise of the Strait of Magellan and South Pacific, 1879-1882

An album containing 28 mounted photographic prints, with 11 loose photographic prints, and two newspaper cuttings. The album has the inscription "John Bushell, October 1882" inside the front cover. This album also contains prints the same as ALB0167.

The album can be divided into three main themes:

1) Images 1 to 17 relate to the surveying expedition of HMS Alert (1856) under Sir George Nares to the Strait of Magellan and the South Pacific. They are the same images as in Album 167.
2) Images 18 to 28 are an eclectic mix ranging from photographs of Moushill Manor, Surrey to a Portuguese milk boy, as well as an image of two Pategonians (similar to those in Album 167).
3) The loose images cover the views from Ceylon, HMS Amphion in dry dock after striking a rock in November 1889, a view of the church at Esquimalt, as well as two views of the sail loft converted to a ball room.
4)The newspaper cuttings relate to a commemoration of the achievements of Sir Alernon Heneage to celebrate his 82nd birthday, a a cutting from the Sunday Times relating to Queen Salote of Tahiti, commemorating her visit to Britain for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
