Medal commemorating Admiral Piet Heyn (1578-1629). Obverse: Short bust of Admiral Hein in a ruff (three-quarter left). Legend: 'PIETER . PIETERSZOON . HEYN'. Reverse: Three 17th-century ships of war in the foreground under sail, a city in the background. Above, the arms of Delfshaven and Dunkirk entwined by a ribbon inscribed with their names 'DELFSHAVEN DUYNKERKEN'. Legend: 'GOVDT . VOOR . SILVER . EER . VOOR . ALL . 15 NOVEMBER . 1577 - 20 . JVNI . 1629.' (Gold for silver, honour for all. November 1577 - 20 June 1629.) The legend refers to the admiral's capture of the Spanish silver fleet at Matanzas (Cuba).
